Rudbeckia (Black-Eyed Susan)

Brown-eyed susanOne of the blossoms that we are seeing in a lot of yards and gardens right now is the beautiful black-eyed susan.  Also known as rudbeckia, these gorgeous plants are a great choice for the gardener that wants to make a bright and colorful statement without a whole lot of work and maintenance.  They can range in color from red, yellow and orange shades offset by dark brown or yellow centers.  People recognize them as readily as they recognize daisies.

There are many varieties of rudbeckia and, as our designers will tell you, they make a charming addition to a wildflower themed arrangement.  Rudbeckia are easy to grow and adapt to a wide range of soil and light conditions.  Also, with some deadheading you can limit their spread or you can allow them to re-seed to fill up empty space in your perennial garden.

Bottom line, you can’t really go wrong with these hardy and highly versatile plants.  And incidentally, ours are in flower right now if you want to stop by the store and check them out.  We’re always happy to “talk shop” with all kinds of gardeners; amateur and professional alike.  Look forward to seeing you!
